I don't like #Trump at all, but the politics in #Corvallis is borderline intolerable -- to the point of being a bit toxic for all of us who are trying to advance to the next stage.

There are a lot of ambivalent people living here. Actually it's really a mix and not just neoliberals and the cliquish types.

Maybe we need someone like Trump to get in there and make things a lot worse before these ambivalent people get a grip and see what's going on around here. Maybe then they'll start collectively organizing to overthrow people like #Albany 's Mark Shepard who is #Corvallis 's semi-corrupt City Manager and is the man directly responsible for signing off for much of the recent city land giveaways to capricious out-of-state real estate developers.

They've really been on the ball here in Corvallis building shitty apartment complexes everywhere by the score.

Corvallis, please fire Mark Shepard. He is a POS.

America stinks right now.

It's so many things. More than half of SCOTUS is genuinely nuts. Half of Washington, D.C. is a full-on gerontocracy. The military is out of control on the world stage as per usual, with indiscriminate drone bombings in almost any country that remotely threatens US dominance over their oil imports and US oil exports.

And here in the #PNW more specifically the #WillametteValley in western Oregon, the high cost of housing including the rental cost for both apartments and townhouses is literally going through the roof. Here in #Corvallis, we have so much land available and yet much of our zoned land within the city limits is being used to build #OregonState grad student housing and also build more luxury apartments that no one but rich foreign students can afford.

It's this kind of stuff that agitates the political fringe groups such as MAGA to no end. We are more or less giving land handouts to foreigners and also entitled young people who may not deserve an all-expenses-paid-for college education. A lot of others who do not have that access starve on either side of the political spectrum which they hail from, while the politicians are often throwing stones.

It was a great morning of slow birding around the Timberhill area of #Corvallis, with most of my existing year list showing up, along with these six newcomers. The bluebird gave us a close look, and that was a treat on a rainy winter's day.

11) Bushtit
12) House Finch
13) Pine Siskin
14) Red-breasted Nuthatch
15) Downy Woodpecker
16) Western Bluebird

I'm super fucking pissed off that #Corvallis never gets any revenue coming its way for tech-based regional #infrastructure.

It's always the same song and dance over here whether working within a university or writing up a grant by way of a SBA loan.

Apply for grant, and then either get accepted or rejected.

Now that works for a percentage of people. It's not inherently a bad system.

But for people such as me who are trying to make revenue by starting out through sole proprietorships and self-employment, this is simply not doable.

THE MONEY IS NOT THERE. And it's not just because western #Oregon's economy is lackluster.

It's because of what I was referring to, before. These whales in business screw the whole business ecosystem up for the rest of us technologists on a regular basis through both their malfeasance and interfering in others' business practices by way of tactics such as corporate espionage.

It's gotten so bad that VC's, investors, and the like will not touch any decent tech project outside of the Silicon Valley region unless it is fully backed by series-type funding to begin with. Series funding is kind of a hard way to make revenue. You must have around a minimum of ~ 50 employees and jump through all sorts of financial and regulatory hoops.

THAT is why many of us say that the whole finance system is broken. We need improvements to capital funding and "angel investing" so more startups can thrive in this cut-throat market -- where foreign governments hack servers to steal our intellectual property and other big corporations outsource many jobs to India.

Cut and dry, that is really all there is to it. Improve the finance so most of us can be better off, over the long-term.

I originally heard that Margaret Atwood's talk here in my little college town had been moved online because of the storm. That made sense. It turns out that the real story is sadder, but depressingly unsurprising. If these fascist assholes can shut down a book talk in Corvallis, they can do it anywhere.

For those who are able, the coming months and years will require us to grow and nurture local networks that already help the most vulnerable and harmed people. These are four charities in my area that I have supported in the past and will going forward:
