I've just read this excellent piece of #GraphicMedicine by Alanah Knibb & Omatola Thomas about early onset Parkinson's, the importance of building community, & how knowledge & understanding of the disease is different across communities.
Since it's #brainawareness week, I want to take a break from the ongoing dystopia to celebrate my favorite organ and repost some of my favorite #neuroscience #sciart!
Let's start with this #scifi brain city I just made for an upcoming Italian graphic novel
Join us as we discuss Menopause: a comic treatment together or check out our closing keynote talking about Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine with Lisa Diedrich (Stony Brook University) and Briana Martino (Simmons University)!
We've opened the event to public attendees after we had a few people request access to the events.
A new comic I helped create. A story of care that turned midway into a story of grief. I thank Tania for the courage to tell her story and Sarah for her beautiful artwork. My job was script and layouts. A pdf is available. #GraphicMedicine #NeuroOncology

Some thoughts:
1. Learning better self-care, e.g. boundaries for stressful people and events, can do a lot to prevent unnecessary stress and aid recovery.
2. Our mental and physical health need good quality nutrition, sunlight and exercise .
3. Cutting sugar and over-processed food for 6 - 10 days improves our gut health immediately, improving general physical and mental health, or longer for long-term health issues.

I think in order to feel #DisabilityPride, a person needs to have a workable answer to this question: What does it mean to believe in oneself _and_ accept one's own limitations?
How do YOU relate to the things you're bad at but have to do anyway? Or the things you feel judged for not being able to do at all?

Being #disabled does NOT make a person pathetic! Aw HELL no. But the cultural messages say otherwise & I'm really struggling with *feeling* pathetic, worthless, etc. I don't think we can talk about #DisabilityPride without also talking about #DisabilityShame.

This is why I'm interested in graphic medicine and using comics for science communication. This is a response from a reviewer to a journal article I submitted about patient experiences of time in brain tumour comics. #comics #GraphicMedicine #ScienceCommunication
Geeked to be participating in the #graphicmedicine conference this summer as a keynote alongside @zaraslattery! I first learned of GM from narrative medicine profs who sat in on my first class teaching comics at Columbia way back & have been sharing with students to great response ever since! Check it out!

Hello everyone
Just noticed it’s my 1st anniversary on Mastodon. There doesn’t seem to be much to celebrate at the moment, but Mastodon is a reminder humans are good, curious, intelligent, witty, creative, supportive and on the whole very lovely.
Thanks for being here.
If anyone wants to say hello, I’m a media professor interested in #comics and #GraphicScience and #GraphicMedicine in particular. I’m currently writing a book on comics and #communication. Glad I found this place.
