Happy birthday to #neurologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852 - 1934), here in front of Purkinje and granule cells from a pigeon, based on one of his own drawings! Cajal &Golgi won the Nobel in 1906, “in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system”. He was as much of an artist as he was a scientist & his 100s of drawings are still used for teaching purposes.

Born in 1852, in Petilla de Aragón, Spain, 🧵1/n

"Quand la civilisation actuelle comparaitra au tribunal de l’histoire pour avoir tué, détruit, laissé mourir, par tous les moyens possibles, mêmes administratifs son avocat, comme circonstance atténuante, fera valoir la CHÈVRE-NOURRICE."

How flightless birds, among other things, undid an airstrip:
“Quickly, however, the airstrip met with opposition from environmental groups who argued that it would destroy important nesting grounds for Adélie #penguins, snowy and giant #petrels, Cape pigeons, and #fulmars, and also disrupt the nearby Emperor penguin colony.”

Happy birthday to Zofia Keilan-Jaworowska (1925-2015) a Polish #paleobiologist famous for a series of Polish-Mongolian expeditions she lead from 1963-1971 to the Gobi desert! There she discovered dinosaurs including the Deinocheirus, plus she & team found the “Fighting Dinosaurs” fossil specimen in 1971 preserving a Protoceratops & Velociraptor trapped in combat about 74 million years ago. Her research covered a wide range of palaeontology 🧵

"The Gallery of Mineralogy is so long, von Rumpel can hardly see the end of it. In sections, display case after display case sits vacant, little shapes on their felted shelves marking the silhouettes of whatever has been removed. (...) A gorgeous set of yellow topaz crystals on a gray matrix. A great pink hunk of beryl like a crystallized brain. A violet column of tourmaline from Madagascar that looks so rich he cannot resist the urge to stroke it. Bournonite; apatite on muscovite; natural zircon in a spray of colors; dozens more minerals he cannot name."
La Galerie de Minéralogie du MNHN telle que décrite dans le roman historique All the Light We Cannot See (Toute la lumière que nous ne pouvons voir)
