Guess who:
a) forgot to turn the alarm off yesterday morning, and
b) has just about completed Sunday's chores?
Alright, what are we cooking for dinner? Anything fancy? Kai is absolutely something I'm going to double down on today.
Mānawatia a Matariki to my fedi-friends
Mānawatia a #Matariki! Happy New Year!
@iangriffin Thank you. I had never heard of #Matariki. And nice to see a sunrise when we had just been looking at the sunset!
@matty Aotearoa New Zealand is ahead of the rest of the world time wise but not that far ahead.
You have time to read up about NZ's latest #PublicHoliday #Matariki and the reasons for it on other posts. JFN theme is likely to include some related elements, but wording not finalized.
Or have a read and watch here

Kai for #Matariki Hautapu Ceremony:
Prepare a hāngī or cook kai in a pot or the oven. Here's each whetū (star), and matching kai:
> Tupuānuku - something from the earth, kūmara or rīwai (potato) is fine.
> Tupuārangi - trad choice is kererū. Heihei (chicken) or duck is OK.
> Waitī - fresh water fish e.g. eel, trout, or salmon.
> Waitā - ocean fish e.g. snapper, tarakihi, or hoki.
Cook these in time to see Matariki in the morning sky.

#Matariki is very much part of Aotearoa New Zealand to be celebrated by the people who live here. Tips on celebrations on link.
This year Matariki is celebrated on a Friday and for some that means it coincides with #JukeboxFridayNight.
Themes of stars, food, memories of people we mourn, and renewal all come to mind as themes for shared music. Hard to compress into words tho
It feels good to see so much here on Mastodon and elsewhere as to what people are doing to celebrate Matariki. It's starting to feel like our first truly national day. (I know we have Waitangi Day but that, I think, has a different resonance.) Many pākehā like me need to embrace its uniqueness more, but I can feel something special beginning to emerge. There is an awful lot to be negative about Aotearoa at the moment, but Matariki isn't one of them - quite the opposite in fact.
This #Matariki my partner is with other family to scatter ashes of their father in places he loved.
Those of us back home will remember other loved ones we've lost and share kai. We may even join others on Wellington waterfront for community events.
Tonight I heard (but won't catch or eat) kākā calling out before flying away.

A tiny contribution from me for #Matariki and promoting understanding between my people and tangata whenua. (Note: this is on Facebook.)

We're quickly coming up on Matariki, the Māori New Year which this year falls on June 28. It's a great time to teach about Māori culture with Whale Rider, the award-wining film about a Māori girl who challenges tradition to fulfill her destiny. Make it a film-book pairing with the book the film was based on, The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera.
Our classroom-ready lesson plans for teaching with Whale Rider cover subjects across the curriculum, including a mathematics lesson on counting the uncountable, and a science lesson on whales and echolocation.

The people who live in this house with me are trying to convince me that pancake breakfasts are a #matariki tradition and that tikanga dictates I should be the one to make them.
I have a limited frame of reference with which to debate this. Any cultural guidance from the collective?
