Couple of fancy birds showing off their unique styles.

A grey male belted kingfisher stands on the top of a wooden railing over a canal. His dark eye is looking down over his long sharp beak towards the water below. The feathers on his head are standing upward, like a spiked hairstyle. Matching grey back and wings stand out from the white neckline and chest just barely visible. Small black wing tip feathers are visible while tucked against his body.

A large great blue heron stands on one leg on top of a dirt pile, long neck tucked down tightly against its body, wings folded close like a cloak. The white head with dark blue stripe above a yellow eye shine in the sunlight, with a long thick bill held straight out. The folded neck sports light frilly feathers, giving the bird a classic look with the cravat at its throat.

After bebopping around the desert yesterday morning, went over to Harmon Reservoir to start working on my 2025 birding list.

Here are a few of the photos I took while out.

A dark blue and white Belted Kingfisher perches in a bare tree overlooking a reservoir. Sunlight shining down on it makes the dark eye gleam. The loose head feathers are held back, giving it a less punk look than usual. The dark blue band across its upper chest stands out boldly from the bright white belly.

A tall Great Blue Heron stands amid the winter bare sage brush. It's long yellow and grey beak extending out from the white and black head with a bright yellow eye looking out over the sage. The neck is tucked down, forming a slight S above the large grey body. Long loose neck feathers hang like a fringed neckerchief over its chest.

A red-tailed hawk soars in the bright blue sky, its wings spread wide and showing the dark brown "shoulders" and wing tips. The brown belly band is visible against the white chest and white legs are tucked up against the underside of the tail.

A group of six bright blue and one dull blue brown Mountain Bluebirds stand around a low puddle of water to drink. The sunlight is reflecting off the rippled water, lighting up the birds above and below and making their blue feathers gleam. The water also reflects the birds as they stand on the small mounds of mud.

Birds of the Secluded Pond

Oh wow, here is a great egret (Ardea alba) at a secluded pond in Albany, Georgia. But wait, if you look to the left on a tree branch, you'll see what I missed when I took this photograph. There is a belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) just sitting on the branch.

The image shows a serene scene at a secluded pond. A great egret stands gracefully in the shallow water near the shore, surrounded by trees with overhanging branches. Male Belted Kingfisher perched on a dead branch in a tree overlooking an estuary.
"Belted Kingfishers are stocky, large-headed with a shaggy crest on the top and back of the head and a straight, thick, pointed bill. Their legs are short and their tails are medium length and square-tipped. These kingfishers are blue-gray above with fine, white spotting on the wings and tail. The underparts are white with a broad, blue breast band. Females also have a broad rusty band on their bellies. Juveniles show irregular rusty spotting in the breast band." (AllAboutBirds)

A Belted Kingfisher, a slate grey bird with a long pointy beak, wild head feathers, and a thick white collar over a white chest with rust patches under the wings, perches amid winter bare branches of a tree. The gleaming black eye looks out over a slightly open beak.

I decided to make a couple of sketches of belted kingfishers. One was done very quickly just to get the shape, the other was fine with a bit more care and time. I do like them both.

It's hard to mistake a Belted Kingfisher for any other bird around here-- they have such an unusual look. This might be the best shot I've taken of one, and it is heavily cropped. I have never had success trying to creep closer to a Kingfisher. #BirdPhotography #birding #birds #BeltedKingfisher
