#Israel cuts off #electricity supply to #Gaza, affecting a #desalination plant producing drinking water

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — "Israel cut off the electricity supply to Gaza, officials said Sunday, affecting a desalination plant producing drinking water for part of the arid territory. Hamas called it part of Israel’s '#StarvationPolicy.'
"Israel last week suspended supplies of goods to the territory of more than 2 million #Palestinians, an echo of the siege it imposed in the earliest days of the war.
"Israel is pressing the militant group to accept an extension of the first phase of their ceasefire. That phase ended last weekend. Israel wants #Hamas to release half of the remaining hostages in return for a promise to negotiate a lasting truce.
"Hamas instead wants to start negotiations on the ceasefire’s more difficult second phase, which would see the release of remaining hostages from Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces and a lasting peace. Hamas is believed to have 24 living hostages and the bodies of 35 others.
"The militant group — which has warned that discontinuing supplies would affect the hostages — said Sunday that it wrapped up the latest round of ceasefire talks with #Egyptian mediators without changes to its position."

How can fresh #water be obtained from #seawater without conventional #desalination? Professor Sebastian Seiffert and his team at #MainzUniversity have developed a promising approach: HydroDeSal uses a hydrogel that reacts to changes in temperature. It draws water from the sea when its cooler and releases drinking water when temperatures rise. The application is now to be made ready for the market.

A new system could make #brackish #groundwater drinkable at low cost in communities where #seawater and grid power are limited. The system is a variation of a previous design based on #electrodialysis, which uses an electric field to draw out salt ions as #water is pumped through a stack of ion-exchange membranes.

I've been following your work since my early days of PhD work when I started working on the impact of algal toxins on #Desalination. I'm now a faculty member at a CA #CommunityCollege and therefore don't have access to many journals. The more scientists publish #OpenAccess the more I have available to share with my students who I am trying to inspire in their STEM career pursuits!

#FunFactFriday: Desalination is a useful process for places without clean water access, which are often hot and dry. A new system can provide clean water, cold air and an energy source all in one! Do you think this is useful for the future? News Source: https://techxplore.com/news/2024-12-desalination-hydrogen-electricity-cool-air.html
A new wave of #desalination startups argues that deeper is better - https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/10/a-new-wave-of-desalination-startups-argues-that-deeper-is-better/ "reverse osmosis equipment is dropped deep in the ocean, around 1,300 to 2,000 feet down, where naturally occurring pressure helps push water through the membrane. Only relatively small pumps are required to lift the fresh water out of the deeps"
Can #desalination quench #agriculture’s thirst?
"Miles away from the ocean, projects are afoot to clean up salty groundwater and use it to grow crops. Some say it’s a costly pipe dream. Others say it’s part of the future."

"#Morocco's phosphates and fertilizer giant OCP and French energy firm #Engie signed a preliminary agreement on Monday for projects that could generate investments in Morocco worth up to 17 billion euros ($18 billion) in #desalination, #RenewableEnergy and green #hydrogen."
#Desalination system adjusts itself to work with renewable power
In #electrodialysis, "the membranes are arranged in such a way that the #water flows along them. On both sides of those membranes are positive and negative electrodes that create an electric field, which draws salt ions through the membranes and out of the water."
The system adjusts the flow rate of the water and the power applied to the electrodes to match the available solar power, no batteries needed.
#FunFactFriday: A year ago we brought up a solar-powered desalination system that could produce clean drinking water, and a 6 month prototype run has shown it can produce up to 5,000 liters of water per day! What are your thoughts on this? News Source: https://techxplore.com/news/2024-10-solar-powered-desalination-requires-extra.html
Peter, a question for you:
What’s the current thinking about the viability, in economic and any other senses, of #desalination plants as a solution for populations in some regions needing more water? Has the cost of solar+battery storage come down enough that they mitigate the high-energy requirements that were apparently one reason desalination isn’t more widespread?
Turnings billion dollar problem of not addressing climate change into a trillion dollar equity problem: But #desalination is also the most expensive type of water to produce. The San Diego County Water Authority pays $3,400 an acre-foot for the Carlsbad water — more than double the cost of water it imports from other sources… By comparison, the Santa Clara Valley Water District pays about $400 an acre-foot to the federal and state government for water it draws from the #Delta. However, that #water is not as reliable during droughts.
