#Trump’s budget proposes to eliminate entirely a $4.1 billion program that helps #LowIncome Americans pay their #heating & #cooling #bills. The proposal says that the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program [#LIHEAP] is “unnecessary” because Trump is planning to increase domestic #oil & #gas production & reduce #energy prices. Last month, the admin fired everyone working in the program’s office, which currently helps 6.2 million Americans nationwide offset high #UtilityBills.

#today working on 3 different talks for different audiences, though there may be some common #heating-related themes!

Will be visiting a school tomorrow to help it along the path to installing solar PV. The school site manager is keen, but there has been some sort of snafu that I hope to understand and resolve.

We're in a bit of a warm spell here in Southeastern #Vermont, which is something of a comfort to me this year, with my #heating oil tank nearly empty, and at least 6 weeks of heating season remaining.

I really do not want the tank to run dry, so I may need to shut off the furnace early this year, and rely on running up my electric bill with space heaters for a month.

I really need a much smaller apartment, with modern electrics, thicker walls and insulation, closer to downtown. #urbanism

Titel: In the Meadow Hills. In order to provide an alternative to overdevelopment. Hundertwasser planned Meadow Hills in the 1980s, a housing development in northern Vienna. This community of energy-efficient houses nested into the landscape was designed to grow with the families that inhabit it. All buildings were to have green roofs to be used as meadows, forests, and vegetable gardens. The project was never realised in Vienna due to resistance from a local citizens' initiative that feared distrurbances caused by tourism to Hundertwasser's architecture marvel. As a different project, Hundertwasser's Rolling Hills concept was eventually realised in the 1990s, but not in the form of an urban housing development. Instead, it was further developed as a leisure complex for the Rogner Bad Blumau thermal spa in eastern Styria. There, Hundertwasser was able to construct buildings nested into a meadow landscape, the likes of which he had designed in the 1970s as prototypes of his visions of a life lived in harmony with nature, such as the Augenschlitzhaus (eye-slit house) and the Waldhofhaus (forest-courtyard house). 1-7 (see post) 8. granting of window rights 9. more quality of life for the neighbours, not just for the residents 10. an Austrian way out of the cul-de-sac of city planning which will be a precedent worldwide. This sun thing sure saves a lot of firewood. I hear it may be going on all summer!

Haven't fired the heater since yesterday, just sunshine on the windows (reflected by snow, increasing its power) and whatever heat was stored in the masonry from yesterday.

Apparently going to be -15°C tonight though, so I better get that fire going soon.

It was -7 C when I got up this morning. -6 C when I got around to measuring the temperature outside, where our heat pump was reducing the air temperature to -12 C in order to heat air inside to +45 C.
Initial power consumption is 1350 W, which drops as soon as we approach the set temperature.
For a total cost of only about €1500 including installation (no subsidy was available so that's really the total cost) we can now heat our downstairs very well for very little money and with very low emissions.

Paying the heating bill.

Set up a nice firewood station now. The three-limbed stump makes a good log sawing stand.

Also rolled the old chopping block over there, shortened it a bit (it was too tall even for a tall person) and split the logs I collected from clearing the road.

The apple logs were in full sap (result of overly warm January) and frozen hard - the axe just bounced off. They'll have to thaw first.

Could use a slightly heavier axe.

"An Adventure in #YakShaving", or "How replacing a #Radiator took way longer than expected, because some asshole didn't do a proper job installing an isolating inner wall and left a hole behind it".

An ongoing story in four parts. So far. An I haven't even started putting up the new radiator.

You thought this would be easy, eh? Isolation wall missing behind radiator. Marks from where the radiator was painted to the wall and wall paper tore off when removing it.
Well, this is going well! Inner wall segment removed. New wooden framework built and ready to be screw into place.
Aaaarrgh! Minor setback! Drilled STRAIGHT into not one but TWO electrical cables. A first for me. All fixed now according to code.
Frame and isolation installed. Drywall put up. Plaster applied. First layer of paint applied. Looks nice.
