Oxford Station. Catching a train to Manchester for a get-together in memory of the Nightline Association, which will sadly be closing this year (although individual Nightlines will doubtless soldier on just as they did before the Association).

Carrying a big ol' bag of Three Rings swag to give to basically anybody who expresses even the slightest interest. 😅

Three Rings has been supporting Nightlines since before the Nightline Association and nowadays underpins voluntary work by hundreds of other charities including helplines like Samaritans and Childline. Feeling sad that the Nightline Association is going away and looking for a new and rewarding way to volunteer? Come chat to me!

I still find the sight of Waymo vehicles driving around Austin with nobody at the steering wheel uncanny.

Will these vehicles doom the human driven taxi?

Although I can see how these vehicles could be beneficial if they were introduced as part of a publicly regulated and accountable integrated transport policy, I fear that in the USA at least they will become the tools of private monopoly; fares will not come down significantly in spite of labour cost savings, taxi driving as a path to social advancement will be closed off, and their use will chip away at support for mass transit.

We should not be allowing private business to dictate the future of transport.

Sustainable Workplaces?

How we might combine social-economic #transition with #ClimateChange adaptation

The growth of capitalist #economy can’t continue forever: the natural resources of wealth have been exploited for centuries. And humankind is more and more threatened by the destruction of world climate. Not only through #GlobalWarming and water scarcity, but also through land use change and destruction of #biodiversity on this planet by competing enterprises.

The market economy, subsidized by the state, has permanently disturbed the sensitive system of ecological interrelations by massive burning of fossil energy (coal, oil, gas), eg. leading to melting ice caps. To prevent further tipping points, we have to relearn how to run the economy in a sustainable way. Meaning: self-organized, decentralized resource planning and services instead of big business monopolies. Therefore we have to start, where the destruction of nature originates: in the workplace.

Whether in production or manufacturing, #transport logistics, education, cultural and #welfare sectors, #healthcare industry, construction or agriculture and trade – there’s a wide range of opportunities to locally resist the destruction of nature by industry. (...)

Environmental improvements and community engagement have also been prioritised. Managing Director Martin Beable praised the achievements over the past 13 years and confirmed the company’s ongoing focus on high service standards during the transition.

The first #HS2 tunnel into #Birmingham has been completed, marking a major milestone for the UK’s largest #infrastructure project. The 3.5-mile Bromford Tunnel, now the longest ever built in the West Midlands, connects Warwickshire to Birmingham and is set to boost regional connectivity and economic growth. Over 10,000 people and 400 businesses in the West Midlands are contributing to the project, expected to generate £10 billion for the local economy over the next decade. The tunnel, bored by a machine named Mary Ann after author George Eliot, removed one million tonnes of spoil, reused for nearby construction. The project is part of the government’s Plan for Change, supporting 30,000 jobs along the 140-mile route, improving rail capacity, reducing journey times, and unlocking brownfield development in Washwood Heath. #Transport officials say this breakthrough symbolises progress in connecting people to jobs, homes and opportunities.

A #Transport Scotland-led Working Group has confirmed that the #ScotRail alcohol ban will be lifted from 2 June 2025. Alcohol will be permitted on ScotRail #trains between 10am and 9pm, though restrictions may still apply during major events. The group, which met for the first time on 8 May 2025, is also reviewing enforcement powers to better tackle antisocial behaviour (ASB) on Scotland’s railways and protect staff and passengers. The group aims to assess and strengthen current powers to deal more effectively with repeat offenders. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop welcomed the collaborative approach, while BTP #Scotland emphasised their continued focus on ASB and encouraged public reporting via text. Unions including ASLEF, RMT and TSSA supported the ban’s removal but called for stronger protections for staff, visible police presence, and tougher penalties for abuse and violence on the rail network.

The #UK and #Swiss governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to progress a direct rail link between the UK and #Switzerland. Signed on 9 May 2025 by UK #Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander and Swiss Federal Councillor Albert Rösti at #London St Pancras, the agreement aims to boost tourism, trade, and greener cross-border travel. It forms part of the UK’s wider plan to improve international #rail connectivity and break down barriers to sustainable transport. A joint working group will now be formed to address technical and regulatory challenges, including Channel Tunnel safety and border controls. Industry leaders, including Eurostar and London St. Pancras Highspeed, welcomed the move as a step towards making high-speed services between London and Swiss cities a reality, supporting jobs, the economy, and climate goals.

Friday Links 25-07

A very random collection this week, with some prepping research.

The Life-Sized City report from Berlin is pretty cool, so is the one about building a simple game in different engines, I also liked the post about microservices.

The #London Plan, produced by the Mayor every five years, is a strategic blueprint for the city's development, looking ahead to 2050. The new plan seeks to boost affordable housing, even considering parts of the green belt, while expanding genuinely green spaces. The consultation runs from 9 May to 22 June 2025 and invites public input.

Key priorities include aligning higher housing densities with improved #transport connectivity. A new #TfL metric will complement PTAL to better assess access by sustainable modes. Enhancing existing infrastructure—like converting National Rail lines to Metro-style services—could support mid-rise housing and unlock new sites. Major schemes like the Bakerloo line extension and the West London Orbital aim to boost capacity, though Crossrail 2 may be delayed beyond 2040.

Sustainable travel, reduced car use, and better access are vital to support growth, address inequality, and improve quality of life across London.
