A song sparrow regularly visits our bird feeder and sits entranced, by itself, meditating on the birdseed as it contemplatively cracks the shells with its beak. We've named it Thinky, for its habit of seeking solitude and spacing out.

I wonder if I would recognize Thinky if it returned to my yard with a family in tow. Would its partner and offspring be as peaceful and prone to daydreaming? Or would it still stand out as a space cadet?

Thinky engaged in their favorite activity: staring off into the distance while munching on a seed
Thinky gazes sunward around the other side of the bird feeder
Thinky has dropped to the snowy ground to eat the seeds that fell from the bird feeder. I don't know why, Thinky just dropped those seeds.

Sparrow in a Tree

I need some help with this sparrow. So many of these little birds look much alike. I'm guessing that this is a swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) which is what I'll call it unless I find out differently. Merlin identified it as a golden-crowned sparrow which is very unlikely because their range is the west coast. I took this photo, 20 September 2024, in Shreveport, Louisiana on the bank of the Red River. What do you think?

Hmmm ... Copilot thinks it might be a song sparrow (Melospiza melodia).
