My game already went through 8 art styles revamps and 10 gameplay concept revamps
Realistic 3D
Minimalistic pixel art
Pre-rendered isometric pixel art
MS Paint-like rough pixel art
Stylized 3D
Vectorial
Top down isometric 3D
Monochromatic Pixel Art (PlayDate)
It goes like this:
1) I play/engage with THING
2) Now I want to make thing like THING
3) I lose interest of what I was doing, and now the only thing that matters is related to THING
EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Actually, NINE art revamps, because I also pivoted it once to be an ASCII game, when I was obsessed with RexPaint + Dwarf Fortress + UnReal World.
Then I started making a whole new version of it as an ASCII Roguelike (and of course also changing tech yet again ).
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place Fun challenge: Implement all of them and allow switching between 3D, ASCII art, prerendered isometric, etc, by clicking a button haha
@matias that might actually be a good idea and the final "cure" for lack of focus. Just like Evoland https://store.steampowered.com/app/233470/Evoland/ and Evoland 2 https://store.steampowered.com/app/359310/Evoland_2/
@alfredbaudisch@mastodon.gamedev.place Ohh that game was new to me!
And yeah, sounds like a fun project! Though, probably a lot of work
@alfredbaudisch you should join the Week Sauce jam (or any other small jam) and put the “I need to explore this style” energy into tiny jam games that take less than a week. Allows you to get it out of your system, and make better decisions about what ideas/styles your big game would benefit from and what ones are just itches that need to be scratched
@mysterycoconut I tried the first time when you recommended me last year, and it was when I actually explored one of the concepts/styles.
Then I pivoted again... and again... and again... and again... and again... ∞
I always have a new creative itch to scratch.
At this stage this game is now an internal joke between me and my wife. It's my "forever experimentation thing" and that I should just sell my 6.5k wishlists (if that were possible ).
