I'm wondering if the #gnucash developers use their own software. Nobody who would be able to influence the #ux of it would accept it like this.
I'm using it for > 25 years for my private finances and may have developed a kind of #stockholmsyndrom . Maybe just #vendorlockin .
At least today I'll report some bugs - not much hope of improvement, though.
Finally figured out the best way to do this was just to pick a calendar year and pick up from an opening balance, and give up on importing a very lengthy accounting history over (which is fine, books are closed on those prior years and all reports run). #Gnucash
I've struggled for about a year with the decision of what to use for accounting when Windows 10 goes out of support this year, as my only windows machine at work is a headless old windows box that I only use for running #QuickBooks.
It seems the entire #accounting industry* has gone to web-based solutions, and I can only conclude that they are all horrible and clunky as frick. And it's not from lack of trying on my part.
I'm also amazed at the number of web forms I encounter in the wild where pressing Enter doesn't do anything, even when the button in question is highlighted. UI designers don't know anything anymore.
The art of UI is really in its "Lord of the Flies" moment right now. :'(
* Which, to be clear, not the industry I'm in, but I'm beholden to the "solutions" they currently offer. Taking a HARD look at #GnuCash, because I'm just not feeling the web-based stuff.
Surprised to hear this. From what I can see so far, emphasis on the double-entry bookkeeping principle is actually part of how #GnuCash differentiates itself from #QuickBooks. Bearing that out are the few people that are saying the extra manual effort GnuCash's double-entry system requires is one of the reasons they prefer tools that don't expose them to it.
Agree that what makes various business accounts different is not the ledger but the special reports they generate.
@impermanen_@zirk.us i started using Gnu Cash about 6 yrs ago. Depending on yours needs, it may deserve a good look. BTW, I have an accounting degree from decades ago. #Gnucash
@impermanen_ we're using #gnucash for the @FreeCAD non-profit, serves us well... have a look at @ff3 too
MS Windows is so unusable now that my wife agrees it's time to come over to #linux. The problem we need to figure out is the bookkeeping software for our [currently very] small business. She is used to but not totally stuck on #Quickbooks, which doesn't run nicely on Linux. Also we'd rather not support Intuit and are resistant to a hosted cloud service.
Can anyone share experience with #GnuCash or similar for self-hosted small business accounting on Linux (Ubuntu/Pop_OS)? Boosts appreciated.
@mike_edwards @my_actual_brain great then, so I'll start: did you find a solution for on-the-go tracking if expenses ? (On Android)
I'm reading https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/GnuCash_and_Mobile_Devices but a personal experience would be easier to evaluate those
Tax season is upon me—and guess what? My tax advisor lost my documents and always filed too late . So I'm taking matters into my own hands! I whipped up a nifty script during a night shift
that converts my bank statements (CSV/PDF) into a GNUCash-friendly format, making tax filing a bit less painful. Check it out: https://github.com/kevinveenbirkenbach/financial-helper
@eugenialoli My substitute for Mathematica has been #Maxima , but #SageMath looks to be more powerful (but definitely not lightweight). I'd also suggest, QuickBooks or Sage -> #GnuCash .
I'm adding #Mastodon as a #comment system to all my old #blog posts. A reaction to this Mastodon post will show up as a comment.
This is a post not about music, but more technical: using #GnuCash for #bookkeeping, then making invoices for it with #LaTeX for nice typesetting and styling.

This is one about automatically adding #SEPA Credit Transfer #QR codes to #GnuCash / #LaTeX #invoices: https://bammerlaan.nl/posts/Automatically-adding-QR-codes-gcinvoice-GnuCash-invoices
@motoridersd I'm pondering whether to start learning ActualBudget or increase my knowledge of #GnuCash ... it's an hard call. It surely doesn't help that ActualBudget community is on Discord :(
Imma have 75 more Schmeckles for my monthly budgeting, starting in February!
I finally got that "bailiff"(?) ["Gerichtsvollzieher", in German] off my pelt - i must've missed an invoice, decade(s) ago - before i knew about #GNUcash. A lot of fees and compound interest accumulated, over the years - the original sum must've been like 30 bucks. yikes
Please, recommend ANY kind of budgeting aide to your peers! (i happen to use and like GNUcash - it's free & open source #FLOSS #software)
@neil Just a few things for now;
#GnuCash 5.10 is out! I've been using GnuCash for maybe 15 years now to manage my personal finances, and while its UI has a few quirks it has been a really valuable tool for me.
