Growing up, gamedev wasn't a "real job". Went to Baylor University planning to go into Japanese Christian missionary work (grew up loving anime), but reconsidered since I wanted to feed myself. Knew my only other interest that could pass for feedable was gamedev (programming), though I'd never tried it. After 1st year, switched majors into CS from Philosophy. Fell in love. Struggled through. Graduated. Got a job as a web dev. Now I gamedev in my freetime.

During my teens i played too much of Lineage2, and then one day discovered fan-made server emulator written in java. That switched on my tinkering spirit. Soon after started learning c++ while experimenting with . Anything-games stuck with me ever since. Noone is paying me for doing these things (yet). I hope contributions to game engines count as "being ".

@rokups @willnationsdev Anything that helps in the process of making games is considered imho ;) So It's all good!

@rokups @K1mpp4 Oh yeah, they definitely do. Especially since (as I understand it) employers like to see that you devote time to projects. Demonstrates good character and pro-activeness.

@willnationsdev @K1mpp4 @rokups Unfortunately, not all companies appreciate that. My wife for instance worked at a company where she had to sign that she won't do any other project, being personal or not, while she stays there.

@mikeandtherest @rokups @willnationsdev I work for two indie companies as a dude who does anything but code. So yeah, I know how that works. Both of the companies have had me sign an agreement that I cant be designing anything too close to what the other company is working with. But that's it.

@K1mpp4 @rokups @mikeandtherest See, I can understand if they make you sign things that act as a non-compete clause, but to completely declare ownership over ANYTHING else you are working on is *way* overkill imo

@mikeandtherest @rokups @K1mpp4 They don't even have any business knowing what else I work on in my free time so long as it doesn't hinder my ability to provide a good and valid product / service for them.

@willnationsdev @rokups @mikeandtherest I take it they're not actually legally able to have any of your stuff you've made at home with your own laptop or software etc. But if you use their tools, that's enough right? I don't know the law in the UK or the USA, but that sounds about right.

@K1mpp4 @mikeandtherest @rokups I'm actually pretty sure it's legal for them to demand a contract that exerts control over all creatively produced content (regardless of what tech is used) if you sign a contract agreeing to those terms. This would be in the U.S. anyway. I (for a very short period) signed a similar contract earlier on for a gamedev startup after college that I quickly left.

@willnationsdev @rokups @K1mpp4 What I can say is that, if she didn't agree on signing that contract, which contained that clause, there would have been no job.

@K1mpp4 @rokups @willnationsdev Well most of the time you don't actually use you're employers tools for creating your own stuff. At least not me and my wife. And also, most of the time people I know do a thing at work and something different at home. For eg. me, web apps at work and gamedev in my spare time.

@willnationsdev @K1mpp4 @rokups Exactly, that's how it should be, but apparently it's not. And I doubt that Laura, my wife, and the company where this happened, represent a singular and isolated case of something like this.

@willnationsdev @mikeandtherest @rokups totally get you. What comes to mind is, that... you've watched Silicon valley? That show didn't exactly invent stuff itself. companies want to own anything and everything their bright minds can come up with.

@K1mpp4 @rokups @mikeandtherest I haven't actually! Really wanted to, but I pretty much stick with the base Netflix/Hulu and whatever online anime sites I find.

@K1mpp4 @mikeandtherest @willnationsdev We also just lost lead of AtomicGameEngine, he got job at Epic and was forced out. Too bad, he was terrific to work with.

@rokups @mikeandtherest @K1mpp4 aww man. Sad day...reduz was recently would-be poached, but he rejected the offers he received.

@rokups @willnationsdev @K1mpp4 I guess that happens a lot with big gaming companies, right? They're just too afraid that you could compete with them at some point.

@mikeandtherest @K1mpp4 @rokups "could compete" mwahahaha is already competing. We've made sure of that. :-P

@mikeandtherest @willnationsdev @rokups And the small ones too. I mean you're always really close to the project, so obviously you're going to cause some "brainleakage" when moving to a new project. For example. Since my last game i made for myself was a pretty 80's styled top down shooter multiplayer, that style of concept art followed me for a while. Even though the new project was to be something different. But now time for a

@K1mpp4 @rokups @willnationsdev No, I haven't yet. But I did watch "Modern Times". :|

@willnationsdev @rokups @K1mpp4 You bet it is. But it's all good now, she left left from those bastards in the end.

@mikeandtherest @rokups @willnationsdev Glad to hear your wife found a solution. I'm gonna run for a cup of coffee soon so I'm gonna be offline for a while. Anyways, nice to meet you all here! Let's keep in touch eh? And also, if nothing else from this converstation stayed with you, watch silicon valley. It's a great series I promise!

@K1mpp4 @rokups @mikeandtherest Too bad there isn't a "list", "group", or "friends" feature for Mastodon yet

@K1mpp4 @willnationsdev @rokups Sure thing! Catch up with you later, take care! ;)

@K1mpp4 @willnationsdev @rokups Yeah, but that's the catch. She wasn't allowed to do any other kind of software, regardless if that soft was related of not with the company's product. They didn't care.
