I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of my procedural animation to hand-authored animations on some models I bought. This is so I can better study what I need to improve.
When I got my comparison tool running for the first time, this is what I was greeted with! A bug with the step-height it seems.

@runevision SHIP. IT.
@runevision ah, it is trying to reach the floor of the upper one probably.
hahaha, very nice.
@Sythelux Yeah something like that I think, ha! I think it's not taking world space height of the ground into account. And the one above happens to be at the zero height ground.
@runevision this is great, thanks for sharing!
@tmr232 My pleasure! Procedural animation is a gold mine for glitches. Every bug has high potential of being hilarious.
@runevision where is the bug? I don’t see anything wrong ;)
@aras Damn, and I even added zoom to make it a bit easier to spot.
@aras @runevision The wolf full wheeling it is my favorite. Would not want that chasing me.
@SonnyBonds @aras @runevision Definitely has an "I'm an alien monster unearthed from its ancient icy tomb pretending to be a wolf" vibe.
@runevision please keep it as a bonus feature 8-D
@runevision computer doing exactly what you told it to :D
Procedural one is so much better.
10/10
Needs no improvements
@runevision Beautiful.
@runevision that strut! This deserves to be an easter egg in the final game... hide it behind a cheat code or something!
@runevision they make an big steppy
@runevision
Huge meme potential, can't stop giggling.
@runevision if evolution had thought of it, it would have been a winner
@runevision This is how indie games are born.
@runevision my wife is very sad because you cut the clip before the deer started running 8-D
@runevision thank you very much! Wolf seems to win, still, though 8-)
@runevision no I'm pretty sure this is perfect
@runevision this is optimized walking
@runevision
YA BABY LOOK AT EM GO
@runevision
The cost to falling on the ground and dragging yourself along on your belly in the middle of every stride are a lot lower in a universe without inertia or friction
@jonny heh, maybe. Not sure you can drag yourself without friction though?
@runevision you're right. they must have skidplates for chests
@runevision @jonny Turns out snails were really onto something.
@runevision This looks like a perfect entry for the @glitchgallery
@runevision Hehehee! Also holy heck is procedural animation feasible?? Maybe I can animate myself without having to do it by paw quite so much!!
(am wolf, so I'd need quadruped rigging and animations and it's not like free software tends to include that sort of thing, it's human stuff at best. So I'm starting from scratch.)
@IceWolf Hmm, generally procedural animation is more work than animating by hand or paw. Typical reasons for doing it is for flexibility (like having walk animation fit to any uneven terrain instead of only flat ground) or to adapt to many different creatures. Both are things I need. Whether it's feasible for you depends on your use cases and skills.
@runevision Huh! I was wondering how adapting to terrain works, that's good to know.
I don't really need either (though handling terrain would be nice), so I guess by-paw is likely better then.
@runevision can't see the problem
@runevision Looks good. Ship it.
@runevision my 7 year old and I found this very funny.
@runevision@mastodon.gamedev.place most optimized walk cycle
@runevision this is why I keep saying games should come with outtakes
@runevision while developing Demonicon, we once had a glitch where the walk animation was missing but the run animation was still there. So the slower the character was, the more all bones moved to the character's root position. He looked like a gnome walking around with the jaw on the floor.
@runevision It is good of you to take the step-height bug and ...
[ puts sunglasses on ]
... Run with it.
