Direct projections from anterior cingular cortex (ACA) to the hippocampus in mouse: NOT FOUND. Questions the validity of prior work (Rajasethupathy et al. 2015 https://doi.org/10.1038/nature15389) and brings the mouse back in line with other mammalian brains where such connections have been sought but never found.

“No evidence from complementary data sources of a direct glutamatergic projection from the mouse anterior cingulate area to the hippocampal formation” by Andrianova et al. 2023 https://elifesciences.org/articles/77364

The authors use a more precise method, but also reproduce the method of the paper that reported ACA to hippocampus direct connections and conclude it was an artifact:

“the off-target retrograde labelling in this region was due to uptake of virus in axons passing through the cingulum and/or corpus callosum as well as along the path of the injection needle.”
