Experimenting with different quest icons to move away from the overused ! and ?

- Sad face: I have a quest for you to do.
- Neutral face: You took the quest but haven't completed it yet.
- Happy face: You completed the quest but haven't turned it in yet.

@grumpygamer what if the same character has another quest? never content! always sad!

@grumpygamer what if as the hero you were sort of like a fantasy world's taskbunny, with uh your avatar kind of being the logo of the operation. people think of your avatar when they need you. they impatiently tap their feet and think of the time or the task (meaning each task has an image) when they're waiting on you. they daydream when they are content.

@grumpygamer "I'm not sad, just disappointed, that you didn't take my quest yet."

@grumpygamer it seems like pleading eyes 🥺 should be in the mix

@grumpygamer

I don't know how animation heavy you want to go, but I always liked minimal UI stuff.

Characters who have something to say could emote. Jump and wave at you like "hey it's good to see you!"

@grumpygamer tag yourself I'm resigned granny

@grumpygamer Everyone would be sad if I'm doing other things?

@grumpygamer You can also say it is a tribute to International Superstar Soccer (SNES)

@stephann @grumpygamer damn didnt remember that was a feature, so cool

@grumpygamer

Love it! Fits really well with the other art in the world too.

@grumpygamer It lacks in a11y: I'm bad at reading faces, and would just have to remember what color is what.

@grumpygamer Why not try other emoji? There's plenty of faces and hands that you could try. And other things.

@grumpygamer I think that's a step in the right direction.

@grumpygamer Face with Crown: you have a King's Quest.

@grumpygamer Ron, how much of those maps will be procedurally generated, all of them or just some?

(looking good btw)

@grumpygamer
Interesting idea.
Maybe sad face better with a tear!?
Neutral/waiting could also be sleeping face. Or sleeping face means without a quest!?
🤔

@grumpygamer I might feel like they’re more of a mood thing, like in Epic Mickey where the characters have different animations based on their opinion of how you’ve been fixing things.

@grumpygamer

What about tick-boxes?
Empty box - open
Half box - accepted
Ticked - done

@grumpygamer sounds very good. But it's kind of hard to see. It blends with the background. Also what if somebody is not sad about having a quest for you?

@grumpygamer Angry face: why haven't you accepted this quest, yet? (About to expire).

@grumpygamer getting Theme Park (by Bullfrog) vibes here - queue too long, where’s the loo?

@grumpygamer oh, man, this just begs for a Gameboy Colour-release! Gorgeous.

@grumpygamer This will force me to do all sidequest to keep people happy 😞

@grumpygamer my suggestion is more work and potentially less visible, but how about having them wave to you for available quest, stamp their feet (Rockford in Boulder Dash style) after you accepted it and clap or cheer after completion? 😊

@eobet Player clarity is the most important aspect and animations just don't do that. It takes too much brain space to parse animations. Other games have tired this and it never works.

@grumpygamer interesting... to me, unless everything on screen is animated (like wind effects), animations is what stands out the most... I'd argue then that getting intuitive symbols right is equally tricky (hence the constant reuse you mention). Either way, looking forward to seeing what you end up with!

@eobet But that gets lost if the npcs are doing unimportant animations to show character. It's too much visual noise for the player. That is why I prefer non-diegetic means. There is less confusing. I have yet to see a game where diegetics work well if it's core to what the player needs to do.

@grumpygamer I think it’s nice but I wonder…

- Do those colors work with daltonism?
- Is the face expression clear enough without the colors?
- Would sad faces create more anxiety?
