We have these amazing karst canyons all over the island & on several surrounding gulf islands. Large karst networks of caves & canyons are found in Cowichan Valley, Comox Valley & all through the less populated North Island. Karst sites on Quadra Island & some islands in the Discovery Islands archipelago are being researched. Haida Gwaii has big karst formations network.

I find #geological #karst formations very fascinating. I enjoy exploring them when there's an opportunity to do so. I've found ancient old growth tree crystals in some of the karst formation forests here - they're magical, magnificent & hard to find if you're not looking hard in the right areas.

Not all planets are like ours. I don't just mean the water and life, I also mean the surface process. You look at a high-resolution #geological of #Mars (like this one by Fawdon et al.), and you see stories you won't see on modern #Earth.
For one, it's very old (>2 Billion years). There are also many impact craters, but there is also fractures indicating a complex stress field, fossilized fluvial channel... that is a frozen system vs. the extremely dynamic ones we have here now.

A Geologist’s Nightmare: Wild Guesses at Dunbar

A fleeting stopover at Dunbar and a wander along the coastline offered up a geological wonder. The rock formation on the shore was arranged, rather whimsically, in red and grey layers, calling to mind a Scooby snack tipped on its side.
Of course, not being a geologist, I can only speculate wildly about the rock types. The red, I dare suggest, might be Red Devonian sa ...

The fast-eroding cliffs at #Happisburgh, Norfolk exhibit splendid exposures of a "tripartite" (like neapolitan ice cream) Quaternary #geological succession - massive brown/grey #glacial till at the base, overlain by dark, laminated pro-glacial lake muds, then by glaciofluvial sands.
Two photos show infilled channels in the upper surface of the till, and one shows where the upper two units have been eroded back, exposing the upper surface of the half million year old Happisburgh Till Member.

[#Mars: samples eagerly awaited!] To date, NASA's #Perseverance rover has taken 24 samples of Martian #regolith ... and the surrounding #atmosphere!

Each tube contains fragments of rock ... and air ... whose analysis will complete our current knowledge of the planet's #geological and climatic history, and perhaps reveal the existence of #microbial life in the distant #past.

#China is home to around 200 #tiankeng, which are mostly distributed from the central #Shaanxi province down to the #GuangxiZhuang autonomous region in the southwest. Roughly 1/3 of the country consists of #karst — the highest proportion of overall surface area of any country in the world — compared with just under 1/5 in the United States.

🔖'Reign of the Beast' by Adrian Desmond is out now!

🔎In the 1830s, decades before #Darwin published the 'Origin of Species', a museum of evolution flourished in #London. 'Reign of the Beast' pieces together the extraordinary story of this lost working-man's institution and its enigmatic owner, the wine merchant #WDSaull. Saull outraged polite #society by putting humanity’s #ape #ancestry on display.

He weaponized his #museum #fossils & empowered #artisans with knowledge of deep #geological time that undermined the #Creationist base of the #Anglican state. His geology museum called the biggest in Britain, housed over 20,000 fossils, including famous dinosaurs.

Now multi-award-winning author Adrian Desmond undertakes a thorough reading of #HomeOffice spy reports and subversive street prints to re-establish Saull's pivotal place at the intersection of the history of #geology, #atheism, #socialism, & #working-class #radicalism.

How new tech is making #geothermal energy a more versatile power source
Geothermal energy iscontinuously radiating from Earth’s super-hot core, has long been relatively niche source of #electricity, largely limited to #volcanic regions like Iceland where hot springs bubble from ground. But geothermal enthusiasts have dreamed of sourcing Earth power in places without such specific #geological conditions—like #ProjectRed’s #Nevada site, developed by #startup #FervoEnergy.

Dovedale Griff

On the weather front, a rather dreary day unfolded with the National Trust at Bridestones. Nevertheless, a new view for me as I stood atop one of the High Bridestones, gazing down upon the narrow upper stretch of Dove Dale, also known as Dovedale Griff.

Beneath me, the valley slopes will, in a few months, be infested with bracken, although pockets of remnant semi-natural wo ...
