I mentioned a couple of days ago that we had a #weather forecast for #rain + #snow possibly quite a bit. It stayed rain longer than forecast, finally going white (for a short time) late his morning; stopped for now, but still a possibility of 10-20cm through tomorrow night. Yesterday afternoon when it was just wet / kinda dark I took a short walk on the acreage- I like the #forest best when it's wet! #mosstodon #GoOutsideForMe #GetOutside #Alberta #Canada #SolaceInNature #nature #BorealForest

We see part of the bottom of a balsam poplar tree trunk in upper left, leaning away out of frame. It is medium/dark grey, deeply furrowed vertically and covered in a thin layer of green moss and lichens in silver-green. The base of one large root shows at the left of the trunk and extends toward the lower left of the image, dividing the frame nearly in half, diagonally. The ground is covered with grey to red-brown fallen leaves from last year with a few small clumps of dried grass and fallen dark twigs here and there. Everything is wet dark. We don't see the root itself after the first foot or so away from the trunk, but we can tell where it is just below the surface, since the shallow or lacking soil on top of it has meant nothing is growing there except moss.The moss is bright to reddish green, with a generous sprinkling of dry red spruce needles. It rises just above the leaf litter in irregular clumps and blobs, sometimes touching, some with gaps, higher near the trunk, lower farther away as the root decreases in size/height.

Watched news this morning- Canadian (mostly about coming election: worrying but not full on devastation at the moment) + U.S./International (mostly devastation by U.S. actions and other regional dictators). Yikes. Now YouTube has recommended a woman in evening dress playing a huge harp on the beach for nearly 90 minutes. Sure, I'll take that, along with editing some #nature photos!

Looking over the top of a mixed wood of spruce and bare poplar in near silhouette against a bright sky- mostly smoothly clouded with wisps of cloud blowing over blue toward the right and in centre a couple of larger nodes, soft edged with faintly sunlit upper rims and darker bases blending into the background cloud. #Spring #snow? Maybe kinda but really early March is still winter here. After warm and dry weather for a while, we had fresh snow Monday- not cold, just near average- a little above freezing daytime, colder nights. The moisture is important for soil, trees, wetland recharging etc.

The twig is dusted with granules of snow and the left half holds a big clump of fresh fluffy snow- the rest was probably also covered and it fell off at some point, leaving the granules behind. Background is blurred overcast snowy-mottled grey.
Looking up through a mix of winter poplar and spruce trees, all coated with fresh snow against a pale overexposed overcast sky. In the centre, separated a bit from the trees to each side, is a single large spruce tree with rather tight conical growth, its dark boughs tipped and dusted in white.

We've gone from days around -20C/-4F to +4 to +8C/39 to 46F still below freezing at night. Not exactly spring, but out of sight the trees will soon be getting ready for #Spring activity- like these #catkins from last spring (not an early one, this was May 01). #Aspen catkins are cute and fluffy, but #BalsamPoplar ! Some of the most beautiful #flowers of the year (before they fully open is the best time).

Two small greyish vertical branches form an X with a couple of smaller twigs near the centre/crossing. Just above that centre a cluster of several catkins hangs from one of those twigs. The catkins are several cm long two of them still mostly closed showing deep red of the outside of the many many tiny flowers. the third has opened along one side, so still red behind and below, but along one side open to show a chain of yellow from the structures of the tiny flowers. Behind a blurry grey background of more branches and trunks.

This is Betula pumila Swamp birch or Dwarf Birch it's a #wetland species here, growing in semi open areas among willows etc- they are shrubby/bush multi-stemmed plants, I haven't seen them more than a few metres tall, they might be able to get taller in places free of moose/cows/deer, but still not one of the big #tree #birch #BorealForest #Alberta #Canada #NativePlants #nature

The sun is hitting these leaves, backlighting one to a glowing bright green. I decided to make a longer #video ca 10 mins (editing is..fun..lol) Cutting #firewood in the #bush on a couple of recent #cold days
I make noise with tarps, crunch around on snow, use a chainsaw + wood splitting maul (big heavy axe- don't call it an axe..lol). Lots of ASMR some plain old noise + jibber jabber as I talk + pretty #forest views of frost crystals falling

I was privileged over a week or so to see this beautiful #owl ! It's not uncommon for me to see owl pellets or signs of them hunting on the snow (wing marks etc) but I don't often (not even every year) see the actual birds! This one I saw 3 times over a week or so, all the decent shots +vid from one of those times.

Strix nebulosa ssp nebulosa (American) Great Grey Owl #birds #nature #Alberta #BorealForest #BirdGoddess #animist

a classic looking owl with big round head and fluffy feathered body sits atop a dead small birch trunk, looking straight at the camera. There are some willow stems around, a small skinny spruce to left and light grey sky behind. It looks like black and white, nearly since the light was poor on an overcast winter afternoon.
The same owl in flight-a rather poor photo but we see the owl from the side and mostly underneath as it flies from right to left, wings fully outstretched in a glide. It is sort of speckled/striped- looking almost woven, with near/white parts, light to dark grey, some light brown bits and some near/black bits. It is flying in front of mixed woods of smallish poplars, birch, willows and one small spruce.
The owl has now re-perched, this time on a dead dry branch of a balsam poplar. Several trunks of these poplars- medium grey and deeply furrowed, with lighter dangly somewhat twisted twigs, mingle with dull green spruce. We just see a part- maybe second quarter from the top- of these trees, with the owl in mid frame. The owls body is facing away, but it has turned its head to look back at me. Its yellow eyes and beak stand out from the surrounding white-grey-brown and black feathers.
A closer view, though a bit more from underneath looking up, of the owl in the same new perch. We can appreciate the complex yet orderly pattern of the colours on its feathers. It is looking not quite toward the camera but sort of in this direction though over my head and beyond. We can see that its face, of finer grey feathers than the body, with unmarked light grey between beak and eyes, is outlined with black, and a darker line comes from the top of the head down to the beak so the face is rather divided in two. The overall effect is a very striking and intense looking face! The function of this wide flat elaborately feathered facial disk is to help direct sounds to its ears to enhance amazing hearing abilities.
