Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦠🦐
Cladoceran freshwater #zooplankton are notoriously plastic in that they are capable of wide range of traits without need for sexual reproduction. A new study has found #Daphnia perhaps don't need natural selection. They have high year to year #genetic variation, even under constant environmental conditions, which gives them built-in success across a range of environments, and likely explains their cosmopolitan distribution. #science

Weekend #Plankton #Factoid 🦐🦠
Today: #zooplankton and #turbulence. While marine #copepod effects are documented, little work has been done on turbulence and #cladocerans, which dominate freshwater systems - and notoriously poor swimmers.

MSc student, Luc Goulet, focused on #vorticity (rotation), very relevant to lakes and rivers. Using rotating cylinders, he found speeds where it interferes with #Daphnia ability to orient and feed, so relevant to their ecology. #science

Researchers reveal how genetically identical #WaterFleas develop into different sexes phys.org/news/2024-05-reveal-g paper: nature.com/articles/s41598-024

"#Daphnia are tiny #crustaceans, or water fleas, that are extremely adaptable to their environment. This is due to their remarkable phenotypic plasticity, i.e., their ability to change their form or behavior despite their genetic makeup remaining unchanged. Even male and female Daphnia are genetically identical."

Like many #cladoceran #zooplankton, #Daphnia species usually reproduce by a process known as cyclical #parthenogenesis. This strategy is typically a long period of all-female asexual parthenogenetic reproduction for rapid population growth, but under stressful conditions, is followed by production of males and sexual mating to produce resistant tolerant resting eggs called #ephippia. These eggs can last for centuries in the sediment, and still be able to hatch out!

Experimenting with Tetrapak printing Daphnia, weird little planktonic crustaceans a few millimetres in length known as water fleas.

This one is Daphnia longispina, a Eurasian fresh water flea found in bodies of water of various sizes, as small as rock pools up to large lakes. They mainly eat algae.

Tetrapak printing is something you can do with Tetrapak containers - in this case an empty box of juice!
