A 70s #TV star, #musician and #actor from #London has suffered life-changing #injuries following a #roadrage attack in #Beckton #EastLondon

#MetPol have been unable to find the attacker due to lack of evidence (that area isn't so well covered by CCTV) - which worryingly means anyone driving there is at the mercy of any angry man who chooses to use #violence

Vikki, René and I went for a delicious Pasta lunch today at Fiore Truck in Forest Gate and really, if you like unfussy, delicious Italian food, you must get along and enjoy it.

Have a nice walk on Wanstead Flats (weather permitting), then get fat and happy on pasta and wine.

Some photos, mostly taken from a visit in Summer when it was much nicer weather and we could sit outside!

Happy Movember Day!

The past month or so I’ve been arseing around with a Heltec V3 using Meshtastic – I never once saw a message or conversation, I only ever saw about ten other nodes and only when I went out to somewhere that isn’t where I live, and generally it was a total waste of time

I first suspected the stupid aerial it came with, which proved to be open circuit and so I used that wire+connector to make a quick dipole out of strips of copper slug tape, on the inside of a plastic parts box, which became the housing for it all, that sort of worked better

Then proceeded on a few weeks of wasted time experimenting with copper slug tape in artistic configurations to capture half-&-quarter-wave curvy sinusoidal magic in the air, also making j-poles and a slim Jim stuck to spare small-size Venetian blind plastic slats, none of which gave me any sign of a signal from anyone else, it looked like it was buggered

I was trying to power it from solar, had a whole series of adventures with solar cells from old garden lights (don’t bother, nowhere near powerful enough), wiring it to a scrapped usb power bank’s battery which had a smashed USB socket, but in the storm a few weeks ago it got blown off the shed roof and the OLED display smashed along the glass that carries the connections, rendering the display unfunctional, eventually I soldered across a spare breakout OLED to the i2c for it, then the power socket broke because I was always connecting/disconnecting, so I soldered wires directly to the charger chip’s appropriate connection, which is better

Then I ordered another couple of Heltec V3.1 and have flashed one, still using the little stubby willy aerial it comes with, soldered the power leads to a surplus mis-ordered unused Sony Ericsson battery from a few years ago, and went for a cycle ride with it this morning and it picked up a whole load of stations, I saw someone actually send an actual message on the primary channel for the first time, and now my original Heltec has sprouted a similar number of channels and it’s all sprang to life now! Even unfeasibly distant stations! It has a better slug tape dipole stuck to plywood strip

The original Heltec V3 with all the modifications is powered by an Asda Solar ‘Security’ light which cost £16 and was quite obtuse to dismantle so I basically didn’t dismantle it further than I could get it back together (it seems to be made and then silicon-sealant caulked afterwards then sold like that, so you’d destroy the silicon seal to get in) but it’s remarkably boxy and accessible otherwise, the 2x 18650 is just a screw-in hatch on the back of it, so I soldered the power leads to a pair of folded-over copper tape tabs which are just basically jammed into the battery as you push one of the (paralleled) batteries into it’s holder, then the hatch screwed back on, so no need to dismantle – I just move it about the garden to get the best “sun”
